Developmental Editing
Developmental editing works to resolve larger issues including character development, plot, form, and structure. In other words, it helps the big picture come into better focus.
Rate is .027 per word for the developmental edit.
Rate is .033 per word if adding line, copy editing, and proofreading.
Good developmental editing will bear your target audience in mind and assess your work in relation to industry standards and expectations. Only once your manuscript has been revised, reshaped, and developed will it be ready for a copy edit and proofread. But where can you find a developmental editor with the right experience to take your story to the next level?
Line and Copy Editing
Line editing helps to reorganize sentence structure, syntax, and flow.
Copy editing is centered on punctuation, grammar, and style differences.
This package includes a final proofread.
Rate is .018 per word.
Proofreading
Proofreading is performed after the developmental, line, and copy edits are complete. It addresses surface-level issues such as misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors, inconsistencies, formatting errors, etc.
Rate is .008 per word.
To identify if we’d be a perfect author-editor team, we provide a free five-page sample edit of your manuscript.

I have been an avid reader and writer since the mid-1970s when I dabbled in poetry and short stories. In the late 1980’s I beta read for an author who insisted my colorful scribblings on his manuscript were not beta reading but extremely detailed developmental, line, and copy editing. He suggested I pursue editing as a career, which I did not take seriously until much later after feeling the pull toward studying linguistics, English, Latin, and numerous other languages.
After joining a writing group online in 2011, I offered my services to a young, up-and-coming writer and together we had his debut short stories and novels published via a medium press. To this day, we still encourage each other to strive for our goals and never give up on them.
In May of 2015, I started my full-time, home-based business, and since then have completed online courses for proofreading and copy editing, and have professionally edited for hundreds of authors across all genres, increasing my portfolio of writers.
When I met Patti I was just about ready to begin submitting my work to publishers. Being out of the loop for a while, I wanted the best, cleanest manuscript possible before hawking my wares around the presses. She offered to read through and edit for me, yet she went way beyond that.
Patti Geesey offers an editing service that is highly personal. She becomes invested in the work and really knows how to work with authors of all levels of experience. She works quickly and accurately. She is very unintrusive and understands many styles, working very well within the framework of each genre she edits.
On a personal note, Patti Geesey is no longer JUST my editor, but a person that I count as a valued friend. Since working with her I have grown to understand the modern publishing business in a deeper way, I am a published author and have not received a single rejection since using her services. I cannot thank her enough for her hard work and support for my craft." - Paul Flewitt, Author
I just want to state that Patti is an absolute god-send!
I started off my writing career as a comic author and had to train myself to write prose when that started to falter. I found myself in a writers support group of sorts and, with their aid, I was able to get a 80k word manuscript written. As proud of it as I was, I knew it needed help.
I hired an editor through one of those big services (that I shall not name) and they essentially flaked on me. I worked out a deal with a friend and they also flaked on me. I went back to that writers support group and found Patti Geesey, who was sympathetic to my situation and was more than willing to work with me on turning my manuscript into a proper book... that then won the 2019 Indie Originals award for best fantasy novel!
I can confidently say that my writing would not have been as successful without her treatment of it. She thoroughly understands everything there is to writing prose and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Over the past seven years, I've been fortunate to collaborate with Patti Geesey as my freelance editor. Patti's expertise and dedication to her craft are outstanding. Her ability to meticulously review and critically analyze a manuscript is truly exceptional.
Patti has a keen eye for identifying inconsistencies, ensuring that the structure and flow of the content is logical and engaging throughout. She also excels at pinpointing overused words or phrases, an attention to detail that greatly contributes to maintaining the originality and crispness of the narrative.
One of the most significant aspects of Patti's work is her respect for the author's voice. While she provides valuable insights and suggestions for refinement, she does so without imposing changes that would alter the author's unique style. This thoughtful approach helps to strengthen the personal voice of the work, leading to a final product that is clearly the result of the author's vision, but enhanced through Patti's expert guidance.
I wholeheartedly recommend Patti Geesey to any authors or publishers seeking a professional and perceptive freelance editor.

Patti is an incredible communicator and extremely dependable. She has never failed to deliver projects when she has promised them, and her attention to detail and care is always evident in her work. She is meticulous, smart, and catches things that other people don't (which is why I continue to hire her for editing work!). She's always easygoing and pleasant to chat with, and I've recommended her work to many friends and associates.
